The open world genre is becoming more and more fascinating with each game being released. With the announcement of CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 and Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs Legion, I feel these games will become two of the most important titles of this generation.

Cyberpunk 2077 is based on a tabletop role-playing game written by Mike Pondsmith and published by R.Talsorian Games in 1998. A sequel was later made by the name of Cyberpunk 2020. This was officially released in 1990 and became the pinnacle of table top roleplaying, assigning you roles such as Rockerboy, Solo of Fortune and Hardwired.

This remake has now been introduced in a bold and exciting way by no other than CD Projekt Red. This game allows players to fully customise their protagonist the way they want to. Players will be given the character named “V” who is a 23 year old born in Night City on the 10th of December 2054 and the character gender fluid.

Cyberpunk 2077 takes place in Night City a, vibrant futuristic fictional megalopolis based on Los Angeles California. A cosmopolitan megalopolis obsessed with power, body modifications and a glamorous rich lifestyle. The director Adam Badowski has assembled his group of staff comprising of developers, writers, programmers, voice actors, scriptwriters, game designers, graphic designers and many more to create a revolutionary title.

This title was developed utilising the REDengine 4 with an impressive soundtrack featuring music from Refused, Grimes, Run the Jewels, A$AP Rocky, Gazelle Twin, IIan Rubin, Richard Devine, Nina Kraviz, Deadly Hunta, Rat Boy and Tina Guo. I wonder if this game will contain electronic dance music too, to fit in with the cyberpunk theme.

The game is set in first person and this is due to the developer wanting to allow the player to fully immerse themselves in the world and its many aspects. It has been announced that the game will also include some form of multiplayer, however this will be announced at a later date.

Watch Dogs Legion, is another contender set to bring their take to the open world genre. This is the third instalment in the Watch Dogs series which is based on a fictional London and developed by Ubisoft Canada.

This title will be played in a third-person perspective and is about a group of hackers in the year 2020 collaborating to shut down the opposition.

Your main player can be fully customised and throughout your play through, there will be multiple characters that you can recruit. These characters can also be lost should they die and this action is permanent, pushing you to adapt throughout your play through.

Overall in conclusion, we have two major futuristic role-playing games. Rivals in the gaming industry creates variety and options for the general public to give them the tools to choose what they want to be a part. While we are still yet to hear more info from Watch Dogs Legion in comparison to Cyberpunk 2077 which has a release date. this is an exciting time for the genre.
